My God Alphabet Journey: A

(I love the Psalms, and some of my favorites are acrostics. Acrostics use letters from the Hebrew alphabet to form beautiful poetry about God. I thought it would be good to try this, so for the next few months I’ll take a letter (in English alphabetical order) and write about a few of the infinite attributes of God. I’m not saying mine is the definitive list, but I will use Scripture as the bedrock for each letter. I hope you’ll join me on this journey and even develop your own list. You are welcome to suggest ideas for my future posts. Thanks! Chris

A: All-Powerful

During a recent conversation, a woman told me that the world is gettingharder and harder for her to handle. “Each time I watch the news, it seems likeit’s getting worse and worse.”  She wenton to talk about the toll the stress had on her, both emotionally andphysically. The truth is that problems abound in this world.  Sicknesses, marriage and family issues, financial problems, world tensions, culture clashes and division, politics, andmore can lead us to feel powerless. The ramifications of these problemsthreaten to shake the ground beneath us.

However, there’s another reality that can bring us peace and stabilityamid the trials of life. It’s this: God is all-powerful, and God—His Presenceand His perfect strength— are available and in action for all who turn to Himin faith through Jesus Christ.

There are two parts to this statement: God is the source of all power, and God’s power is at work on behalf of all who entrust themselves to Him.Allow me to unpack this a little:

  1. God is the source of all power, and will always prevail over any challenge in the seen and unseen world. He is the Alpha, the prime and only source!

God’s power caused theuniverse to come into being, and Christ’s power holds everything together, evenas you read this. It has never failed and will never waver! God’s power remainsthe same yesterday, today, and through all eternity:

In the past:

•    His power brought forth everything: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1)

•    His power was fully shown on the cross and the resurrection of Jesus Christ: “And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross” (Colossians 2:15)

In the present:

“God’s Son shines out with God’s glory, and allthat God’s Son is and does marks him as God. He regulates the universe by themighty power of his command.” (Hebrews 1:3)

In the future:

“Then the angel showed me the river of the water oflife, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb…Therewill be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light ofthe sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for everand ever.” (Revelation 22:1,5)

  • God’s power is atwork on behalf of all who entrust themselves to Him.

We can rely on God’s Wordand promises to bring us hope and comfort when the world seems to beunraveling.

“God is our refuge and strength, a tested help intimes of trouble.  And so we need notfear even if the world blows up and the mountains crumble into the sea...” (Psalm46:1-2)

God sees and knows everything that is happening around and in you andme. There is no surprise or challenge that concerns or overwhelms Him. Hissupreme power is currently in force, working on our behalf, as the Scripturestates:

“And we know that in all things God works for thegood of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose...” (Romans8:28)

God’s promise is true, and we can rest on Him through any trial thatcomes our way. The “A’ of my God alphabet is this:

God is all-powerful.

God bless you!
