Truth or truths?

A life of worship is one that takes a firm and life-altering stand on Truth, even if it goes against the grain of prevailing thought.We live in a time when truth has seemingly become relative to many people. The premise of this viewpoint is this: “Your truth is your truth, my truth is my truth, and all are valid even if we disagree”. This perspective is known as relativism and is a relatively easy (pun intended) way to dance around the important issues of life and eternity.But is that approach realistic? Can it stand up under scrutiny?Relativism isn’t some recent development in modern human thought. Consider what Pontius Pilate once asked Jesus just before he condemned him to death on a cross:

[Jesus said}’“You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”

“What is truth?” retorted Pilate.

(John 18:37-38)

“What is truth?” You can almost hear the intellectual smugness in Pilate’s response, especially considering whom he was talking to: Jesus Christ.But the very words “What is truth?” are being spoken today by many in our culture. It’s easy to be tempted to go down the road of relativism with so many voices clamoring for allegiance to their perspective.To test the validity of relativism in regards to Truth, try this mental exercise:

• Hindus claim the existence of thousands of gods.
• Atheists and many Buddhists cling to the nothing-ness of life and hold that there is no God.
•  Christians and Jews hold to the belief in One God.

Stop for a moment and analyze those claims. From a purely objective basis, there’s no way all of them can co-exist as Truth. Only one can stand the test of objective truth.My point is this: Truth is truth even if we try to change or mask it.  Truth is not always easy. Sometimes it’s hard and difficult.The universe demonstrates that there ARE truths and laws in force. For example, if someone claimed that Newton’s Law of Gravity isn’t really a truthful law of physics, we could simply ask them to jump up without any assistance or added technology and see what happens. The truth of the law of gravity will prevail. As we study the universe more and more we find many examples of consistent laws and forces at work.My point is this: There IS such a thing as Truth, with a capital T.I’ll go further. I believe God is the author and upholder of all Truth. God’s Truth can’t be killed or destroyed even though some have tried to kill and bury it.Truth is risen.I invite you to investigate, learn about, and grow deeper in Jesus, the One who said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”We should never be disrespectful of anyone who doesn’t agree with us. A life or authentic worship is marked with respect and love for people. But we should always test whatever we hear against the Truth that our life is founded upon: The God of the Bible, Jesus Christ.As Jesus once said, God is looking for people who will worship Him in Spirit..…and in Truth.
